メイクテーラに大きな空襲


昭和17年11月6日の夜間、オーストラリア西岸エクスマス近海でSS I-154がSS Seadragonの雷撃により撃沈されました。レーダーを装備している米軍の潜水艦にはかなわないんでしょうね。連合軍TFがパースからPort Hedlandに向かうとすればこのヘクスを通過する可能性が高いと考えてパトロールさせていたんですが、よりにもよって潜水艦に沈められてしまうとは。とほほです。

オーストラリア中西岸のBroomeに陸路向かっていた豪軍部隊が到着しました。Broomeには日本軍の部隊がいないので、明日には間違いなく奪回される運命です。舞鶴第三特別陸戦隊と二式大艇3機を分派してあるPort Hedlandにも今日は9機のMItchell II(B-25の英軍使用機をMItchell IIと呼ぶのだそうです)が爆撃にやってきました。負傷者30名だけで大きな被害はありませんでしたが、気になるのはオーストラリア西岸を北上中のTFの存在です。発見した零式小型水偵の報告によるとCVと2隻のAPにxAKという構成だそうで、単なるASW TFとは思えません。このまま北上してPort Hedland上陸を狙っているんでしょうか。もしそうだとすると、早期警戒の役をつとめていたSS I-154の沈没がいっそう残念に思われます。

ビルマ戦線では激しい空戦が繰り広げられました。10月26日に大きな空襲を受け、完全に破壊されていたMagweの飛行場の滑走路の修理が完了し、飛行場サービス施設のダメージも50まで修復されてきました。あの日の空襲により地上で多数の機体を破壊されmoraleの低下してしまった二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)の部隊も、ラングーンでの休養により心身共に回復してくれました。そこで、二式戦3個戦隊をMagweに移動させ、チッタゴンをsweepしてみることにしました。前日の偵察機の報告によるとチッタゴンには194機もの連合軍戦闘機がいるとのことだったので、かなり激しい空戦になることを予想していました。しかし3波合計124機の二式戦に立ち向かったCAPは16機のMartlet IIと7機のHurricane I Tropだけでした。sweepした二式戦の損失は4機で死傷者はKIA 2名のみだったのに対し、TrackerによるとMartlet IIは9機、Hurricane I Tropは4機が損失になっていました。このチッタゴンsweepのスコアは13対4になります。

なぜチッタゴンにCAPがほとんどいなかったのか。連合軍の飛行隊にも10月26日のMagwe大空襲でかなりの被害が出て、この10日間は大きな空襲はなく、休養を主体に過ごしていたものと思われます。同じように疲労した飛行隊どうしですから、日本側のコンディションが良好になる時期と連合軍の回復時期とが一致したのは当然かもしれません。連合軍側も今日は久しぶりに攻勢に出て、Magweの東隣のメイクテーラに大きな空襲を行ってきました。最初は、チッタゴンから8波にわたるsweepで、Hurricane IIc Trop 62機、P-40K Warhawk 63機、P-39D Airacobra 25機とCAPの二式戦113機が対戦しました。Trackerによると、Hurricane IIc Tropには38機、P-40K Warhawkには25機、P-39D Airacobraには15機の損失が報告されていますから、このメイクテーラsweepの空戦スコアは78対22になります。

その後、メイクテーラにはP-38F Lightning 25機とP-38G Lightning 21機の護衛でLiberator II 4機、B-17E Fortress 30機、B-24D Liberator 32機、B-25C Mitchell 28機が6波に分かれて来襲。CAPの二式戦の数はsweepですり減らされていて、爆撃第一波には17機、第二波には12機が迎撃できただけで、その後はCAPなしとなってしまいました。自由に爆撃できたこともあり、Airbase hits 26、Airbase supply hits 9、Runway hits 136と多数の命中弾が出て、メイクテーラ飛行場は滑走路ダメージ93、飛行場サービス施設ダメージ 73で休業に追い込まれました。また二式戦が1機、百式重爆が30機、地上で破壊されてしまいました。この爆撃での空戦のスコアは2対3のようです。

連合軍はこの空襲の戦果をどう評価しているんでしょうか?日本側から見ると、メイクテーラ飛行場を閉鎖に追い込んだのだから成功した作戦なんだろうと思います。その代償として失った93機がどのくらいの重さをもつのか。一週間くらいすれば充分に補充されるからちっとも痛くないのかどうか。私は連合軍側をプレイしたことがないので、そのあたりが今ひとつ不明です。日本側の視点で評価すると、水平爆撃機の損失は一機もないし、今日落ちた戦闘機も性能的に劣る機種ばかりで、大切なP-38の損失は2機だけですから大成功だろうと思うんですよね。

でも連合軍から見ると、メイクテーラのCAPをしていた二式戦部隊のほかに、チッタゴンをsweepできる元気な二式戦部隊がいることが判明して、内心穏やかではないかな?日本側の被害を評価してみると、百式重爆30機の地上破壊がやはり痛い。メイクテーラの百式重爆は雲南省に爆撃にいっていたのですが、rest 30%の設定なので残っていた機体が破壊されてしまったわけです。常にmorale 99で作戦させたいのでrest 30%にすることが多いのですが、100%で出撃させて、休養は後方でとらせた方がいいんでしょうか?また、今日の飛行機の損失は61機ですが、パイロットはWIA 8名、KIA 8名と、お亡くなりになった方には申し訳ありませんが許容範囲内でした。あと、メイクテーラでCAPしていたパイロットの中から2人目のダブルエースが誕生したのも、中の人の士気にも影響するうれしい報らせでした。

その後、ニューギニア東部のワウで陸戦がありました。米軍の27、32、41の三つの師団が揃っての攻撃で、修正AV685対418、オッズ比1対1で今日は辛くも防衛です。しかし死傷者数は999人対495人と日本側が2倍で、fortificationも2に低下したし、明日は陥落でしょう。制空権も連合軍側が完全に握っているし、打つ手がないところ。

南太平洋海戦で8月10日と11日に続けて被弾し、Sys 31, Flt 7(0), Eng 19のダメージを受けたBB 日向ですが、本土に回航して神戸で修理を行って、今日ようやく完了しました。あの海戦で被害を受けてまだ修理中の主力艦はCV 翔鶴、CA 最上・三隈ですが、今月中にはこの三隻の修理も終わります。
